The Google Indexing Time Study follows newly published canonical article URLs on Rank Builder SEO. Its primary question is:

How much time passes between a verified production release and the first observation that Google has indexed the canonical URL?

The study also records several earlier and later events:

  1. Verified production release
  2. Inclusion in the public XML sitemap
  3. First evidence that Google knows the URL
  4. First observed Google crawl
  5. First confirmed indexed state
  6. First Search Console impression
  7. First Search Console click, when one occurs

These events are separate. Google describes Search as a sequence involving discovery, crawling, indexing, and serving. A URL can therefore be published but unknown, known but not crawled, crawled but not indexed, indexed under another canonical, or indexed without yet producing an impression.[4]

Eligible URLs

A URL enters the cohort only when it:

  • is a newly published canonical HTML article;
  • returns a stable public 200 response;
  • is allowed to be crawled and indexed;
  • has a self-referential canonical;
  • appears in the production sitemap;
  • has at least one crawlable internal link;
  • is tied to a verified release commit;
  • is not an archived redirect, duplicate test route, preview URL, or protected legacy page.

If an eligible URL later becomes a redirect, is archived, or receives a material technical defect, the observation remains in the historical record but the change is marked explicitly.

Cohort clock

The release clock begins at the timestamp of the exact production commit or deployment that first made the canonical URL publicly available. A draft date in frontmatter is not sufficient. A local build is not sufficient. A branch preview is not sufficient. The URL must be verifiably reachable on the canonical production domain.

For batch releases, every included page receives the same batch release timestamp unless deployment evidence establishes a narrower individual time.

Methodology

Observation sources

The study uses four evidence classes.

Google's URL Inspection API returns information about the version in Google's index. It does not run the live test available in the Search Console interface.[1] That distinction matters. A successful live test can show that the current page appears eligible, but it cannot prove that Google has selected and stored the URL in the index.[3]

Search Analytics supports grouping and filtering by dimensions including page and date. Google also warns that the API is internally bounded and does not guarantee every possible row, particularly for low-volume data.[2]

Observation schedule

For an active cohort, the preferred schedule is:

  • Daily inspection during days 0–7
  • Every two days during days 8–14
  • Twice weekly during days 15–28
  • A final bounded check after day 28

A missed observation does not invalidate the URL. It widens the interval in which the event may have occurred.

Interval-censored timing

The exact indexing moment is not observable. Suppose a URL was not confirmed indexed on July 28 at 09:00 and was confirmed indexed on July 29 at 09:00. The study reports:

First indexed interval: more than 48 hours and no more than 72 hours after release

It does not claim that indexing took exactly 72 hours.

For each event, the record stores:

  • Last observation before the event
  • First observation showing the event
  • Lower duration bound
  • Upper duration bound
  • Evidence source
  • Inspection timestamp
  • Relevant canonical and coverage fields

Primary and secondary endpoints

The primary endpoint is:

  • Time from production release to first confirmed indexed state for the intended canonical URL

Secondary endpoints are:

  • Time to first known or discovered state
  • Time to first observed crawl
  • Time to first Search Console impression
  • Proportion confirmed indexed by day 1, 3, 7, 14, and 28
  • Canonical disagreement rate
  • Technical exclusion rate
  • Pages with impressions before an available indexed confirmation

The study does not treat ranking position as an indexing endpoint. Indexing and ranking are related but different processes.

Manual indexing requests

A manual Request Indexing action can change the observation environment. For future controlled cohorts, each URL must record one of:

  • No manual request
  • Request made, with timestamp
  • Request status unknown

URLs with unknown request exposure remain descriptive observations but are not used to claim the natural discovery time of an untreated page.

Reporting gates

Rank Builder will not publish a median indexing duration until at least ten URLs have completed the primary endpoint. It will not publish percentile estimates until at least twenty URLs have completed it.

Before those thresholds, the public page may show:

  • Cohort size
  • Counts by observed state
  • Individual bounded intervals
  • Technical failures
  • Data through date

It must not display a decorative median calculated from two URLs and a prayer.

Reproducibility and corrections

The cohort registry and observations are versioned in a structured data file. Material changes require:

  • A new data version
  • A revised timestamp
  • A correction note when a published result changes
  • Preservation of the earlier observation rather than silent deletion

The public report must identify the data-through date and whether values are final, incomplete, or awaiting verification.

Result

The methodology is registered and the first cohort has been identified. No indexing-duration result is reported in this methodology article.

The first public cohort contains active canonical articles released in Batches 2 through 5. The separately published baseline page reports the starting Search Console context and the current number of URLs with qualifying observations.

The first duration estimate will be published only after the registered evidence and sample thresholds are satisfied.

The exact indexing moment is not observable. The study cannot observe Google's internal queue position or the exact instant at which a URL entered the index.

Limitations

This is an observational study of one young website. It cannot establish how long Google takes to index every page, domain, platform, or topic.

Important limitations include the following. URL Inspection exposes Google's latest available indexed record, not the exact internal event time. Search Console reports and APIs can lag behind crawling and indexing. Search Analytics may omit low-volume rows. Batch pages share release conditions and are not statistically independent in every practical sense. Internal links, sitemap inclusion, page type, server performance, topic, site history, and external links can differ across cohorts. Manual indexing requests may be unknown for early batches. Canonical selection can cause the submitted URL and indexed representative to differ. A first impression can occur after indexing, but absence of an impression does not prove absence from the index.

The study is designed to produce bounded, site-specific observations. It is not designed to produce a universal indexing promise, an agency guarantee, or a stopwatch for Google's private systems.

The governing rule is simple:

Report what the evidence can establish, preserve the uncertainty it cannot remove, and do not turn a small cohort into folklore.
