Definition
HTTP 204 means No Content. It is a successful HTTP response, but its success semantics are very specific: the server completed the request and is not returning response content. RFC 9110 defines 204 as a response that cannot contain content. [1] That makes it perfectly legitimate for many API operations, saves, deletes, or acknowledgments, but a poor response for a URL whose purpose is to deliver an indexable web document.
Google's crawler documentation is unusually direct on this point. For a 204 response, Google receives no content to process. [2] The URL may be reachable, the TLS connection may be healthy, and the response may technically belong to the successful 2xx class, yet there is no document body for search systems to interpret as the page.
This is why a generic uptime rule such as "all 2xx responses are healthy" is insufficient for SEO. 200 OK with a meaningful document and 204 No Content have different semantics even though both begin with 2. Search-oriented monitoring has to validate what type of success a route produced, not merely whether an error status was avoided.

Mechanism
When a browser or crawler requests an indexable URL, the site normally needs to return a representation that contains or leads to the page's meaningful content. Google's technical requirements say that pages need to work and provide indexable content under supported conditions; ordinary successful pages are expected to return content that Google can process. [3]
A 204 short-circuits that path. The server says the request succeeded but there is no response content. There is therefore no HTML body containing text, links, canonical declarations, structured data, or robots meta directives. Headers can still exist, but a header-only success does not transform into an indexable document merely because the route was intended to be a page.
Framework defaults can create this accidentally. A controller may return nothing after a conditional branch, an edge function may translate an empty origin response into 204, or an application might reuse an API handler for a browser route. The resulting page can disappear from a user's view without triggering the kind of 404 or 500 alert that operations teams expect. Search crawlers see exactly what the protocol says: successful request, no content.
The risk is greatest when monitoring groups statuses by class. A dashboard that reports "99.99% 2xx" can remain green while a critical landing-page template returns 204. SEO checks should therefore distinguish expected document statuses from API statuses and validate response body characteristics for routes that are supposed to contain content.

Examples
Imagine an ecommerce category page whose backend query returns zero products. A developer decides that "nothing found" means the route should return 204. That response accurately says the server has no content, but it also removes the category description, navigation, related categories, and every other indexable element that could have explained the empty state. If the category remains a valid user-facing page, a normal document response with an honest empty-state message is usually the coherent implementation. The HTTP status should describe the resource, not the number of rows returned by one database query.
A second example is an API endpoint such as a request that updates a saved preference. A 204 can be entirely appropriate there because the client already knows what action it requested and no response representation is needed. That same pattern should not be copied blindly onto /guides/widget-installation, where the whole point of the URL is to return the guide.
Temporary backend trouble produces another failure mode. Suppose a rendering service times out and a wrapper catches the exception by returning an empty 204 rather than a server-error response. Monitoring sees a success while users and crawlers receive nothing. The implementation has converted a visible failure into a silent content outage. Appropriate error semantics are operationally healthier because they tell clients and monitors that the document was not successfully produced.
Migration scans can catch this efficiently. Export the expected indexable URL inventory, request every URL, and flag any 204 alongside redirects, 4xx, 5xx, unexpectedly tiny bodies, missing canonicals, and robots changes. A status audit that reports 204 separately is cheap insurance against a class of bugs that conventional availability monitoring can miss.

Boundaries
The conclusion is not "never use 204." RFC 9110 defines it for a reason. [1] APIs, form submissions, background saves, and other operations can legitimately succeed without returning a representation. The SEO concern begins when a route intended to serve a discoverable document uses 204 as though all successful HTTP statuses were interchangeable.
Nor does changing a 204 to 200 automatically create a good page. A 200 OK response with an empty shell, error message, or unusable client application can still be a search problem. The fix is to return the correct document and status together, not merely to repaint the status code.
Google's documented handling should also be distinguished from a claim about exact timing. A 204 gives Google no page content to process, but when a previously indexed URL changes state, recrawl and index updates are not instantaneous. [2] Do not promise that a URL will disappear or return to search at a precise hour based solely on the status change.
Finally, body validation should be route-aware. An API health check should not fail because an intentional 204 has no HTML. An article, product, category, or documentation route should. Build separate expectations for document and non-document endpoints, and test them at the public edge. The web has spent decades giving status codes distinct meanings; compressing them back into "green" and "red" is an impressively efficient way to throw that information away.
