FastAPI is commonly described as an API framework, but it can serve ordinary HTML pages through HTMLResponse and Jinja2 templates.

FastAPI is commonly described as an API framework, but it can serve ordinary HTML pages through HTMLResponse and Jinja2 templates.[1][2]
That does not make a site search-ready automatically. A public FastAPI route still needs a stable URL, an HTTP 200 response for a working page, useful HTML in the initial response, route-specific metadata, one canonical URL, crawlable links, truthful redirects and errors, and a correct public scheme, host, port, and path prefix.
Google’s minimum technical requirements remain ordinary web requirements: Googlebot must be able to access the page, the page must work, and it must contain indexable content.[3]

Do not return an HTML string through a JSON response and assume browsers or crawlers will treat it as a normal document. Verify Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8 on the deployed route.
Use templates for repeatable metadata.
FastAPI exposes Starlette’s Jinja2Templates integration.[2] A base template can require:

<link rel="canonical" href="{{ canonical_url }}">Each indexable route should supply complete values. Do not use the homepage canonical as a fallback when a record is missing. If an article slug does not exist, return 404 rather than a generic page with the wrong canonical.
Direct routes must work.
Every indexable page should work through a direct request:

A route that works only after client-side navigation is not a complete document route.

Result
Proxy prefixes and root_path.
FastAPI documents root_path for deployments where a proxy exposes the application under a prefix that the ASGI server does not receive.[4]

/knowledgeConfigure FastAPI(root_path='/knowledge') or the corresponding server option. root_path does not rewrite the route table. It communicates the external mount path so URL generation and mounted applications understand the public context.
A wrong root path can produce missing assets, links without the prefix, broken documentation UI, internal-origin canonicals, and redirect loops.
Public host and scheme.
ASGI servers can receive proxy headers that describe the original request. Trust only controlled proxies. A client-supplied forwarded host can contaminate canonicals, redirects, structured data, Open Graph URLs, and account links.
For canonical generation, prefer an explicit production origin or a request object whose proxy chain is correctly trusted and tested.
Redirect status.
FastAPI’s RedirectResponse defaults to 307 under current documentation.[1] That is a temporary redirect that preserves the request method. A permanent page move needs an explicitly selected permanent status, commonly 301 or 308 after client behavior is tested.

Error responses.
Return 404 for missing content, 410 for deliberately retired content when appropriate, 5xx for temporary server failure, and 401 or 403 only for genuine access rules. Do not catch every exception and return a 200 template saying “Something went wrong.”

Limitations
Static assets, sitemap, and robots.
Mount static assets deliberately and test their public prefix, cache headers, and failure behavior. Primary article content should remain in HTML when an optional bundle fails.
FastAPI does not generate a canonical sitemap inventory by itself. Build routes that return valid XML, absolute canonical URLs, the correct content type, and 200 status. Exclude API documentation, OpenAPI schema, admin, preview, redirects, noindex pages, errors, and authenticated routes.
